I recently had the privilege of attending the World Credit Union Conference (WCUC) in Gold Coast, Australia. During the Global Women’s Leadership Forum, I had the extreme honor of moderating the “Advancing Women in Leadership” breakout session.

The Global Women’s Leadership Network strives to promote the advancement of women in leadership within the credit union industry. The network is designed to offer women resources and opportunities to make an impact on each other’s lives, as well as the lives of credit union members and their communities.

Session panelists included Teresa Freeborn, President and CEO of U.S.-based Xceed Financial Credit Union, a client of The Members Group (TMG); Steve James, CEO, Australian-based Teachers Mutual Bank; and Global Women’s Leadership Network Chair, Susan Mitchell, CEO, Mitchell, Stankovic & Associates.

During the “Advancing Women in Leadership” session, we examined several important issues, including how performance results are affected by gender. Specifically, we discussed the ways in which gender-balanced perspectives promote an environment, to ultimately better serve credit union members. We also considered what is working within the industry and what obstacles still stand in the way of women advancing.

The Global Women’s Leadership Network also recently announced six 2014 scholarship winners. TMG is thrilled to sponsor one very talented scholarship recipient, Elenita San Roque, CEO of the Asian Confederation of Credit Unions, Thailand. Each of the scholarship recipients created a blueprint for a local credit union project and presented their completed projects to the network’s members during the forum. Network members then voted on which of the scholarship recipients would receive network support to implement their project. We’re excited to report Elenita was just announced a winner of the grant this month!

I look forward to bringing you continued updates on the network here on this blog.
